Judas Returns the Thirty Pieces of Silver

This miniature illustrates Matthew 27:3-10, where Judas flings the pieces of silver at the feet of the priests. The inscription below can be translated "Judas seeing that Jesus had been condemned and seized with remorse returned to the priests saying that he had sinnned in delivering innocent blood."

Matthew specifies that Judas was confronting the priests and the elders, which may explain why one of the two persons on the dais is old and the other middle-aged.
